Introduction
Welcome to Book Boss: Musings from a Self-Publisher on How to Write, Publish and Market Your Own Book. If you’re a business owner, thought leader or coach looking to share your expertise and build your brand, self-publishing can be a powerful tool in your marketing arsenal. In this book, we’ll explore the ins and outs of self-publishing, from writing and design to publishing and marketing, so that you can create a book that not only showcases your knowledge but also helps you connect with your audience and grow your business.
When it comes to self-publishing, there’s often a lot of misinformation and confusion out there. That’s why we’ll start by tackling some of the most common roadblocks that prevent people from becoming authors in the first place. We’ll look at the most important questions to ask yourself as an author, how to find the courage to tell your personal story, and how to build an ideal reader avatar that helps you write for your target audience. We’ll also dive into the nitty-gritty of writing, from creating a publishing plan to finding the time to write, even with a busy schedule.
But writing is just the first step. To create a book that stands out in a crowded market, you also need to pay attention to design. We’ll discuss why cheap design can hurt your book’s chances, and we’ll share book design secrets from a professional designer. We’ll look at common book design mistakes and how to avoid them, and we’ll explore the science of how we read and how to use that knowledge to build a better book. We’ll also cover the importance of font choice, share our top 10 favourite fonts for books, and give you some tips on manuscript formatting to save time when typesetting your book.
Once you have a great manuscript and a killer design, it’s time to publish your book. We’ll discuss the pros and cons of traditional publishing versus self-publishing, and we’ll explore common self-publishing mistakes and how to avoid them. We’ll also cover the practical aspects of self-publishing, from book metadata to ISBNs to book distribution. And because marketing is such a crucial part of self-publishing success, we’ll dive into the world of authorpreneurship, exploring how self-publishing can boost your credibility, expand your reach, and help you grow your business.
Self-publishing is an exciting and empowering way to share your knowledge and build your brand. And with the right guidance and resources, anyone can become a successful self-published author. So let’s get started on your journey to becoming a Book Boss!

I wrote this book because I know how daunting it can be to embark on writing and publishing your first book. With an overwhelming amount of information online about how to write a book, publish it, and then market it, I wanted to give authors an in-depth perspective from someone who writes and publishes for a living.
